People typically are sad when an old school building closes it's doors for good to students, but the Marietta Times pointed out some real benefits in a recent article about two school closings in their community. In a nut shell, it is all about reuse not tearing down the buildings. If a school district sees the time has come to close a school, with no hopes for the future of using it again - SELL it. Never let it be destroyed through lack of maintenance. These historical buildings need to be preserved as a rememberance of the past, but also because they can do so much for the future. Will the Denver, Colorado, Byers Junior High School be up for sale? How much will they get for it? According to reports from KUSA, 9News, the Denver School Board is considering putting the school, named after William Byers founder of the Rocky Mountain News, up for sale and expect to garner $4 million. Wow! Local residents are concerned that the district will need the building for future growth and without it they will end up paying additional taxes for a new school. The school district, on the other hand, feels the expected growth is not there and the remodeling expenses would be too much. In the long run, they both may be correct. The big problem is not letting the building fall into disrepair and keeping it maintained, although there are no students. It is probably best to sell the building and encourage restoration into lofts. It would be great if the disctrict was able to get $4,000,000 for the property, but.... Lewisburg, TN The old Connelly School located on 5th Avenue facing the crest of Haynes Street is to be sold at auction March 20, 2009. The building is owned by Central Park of Marshall County, a non-profit organization that had a vision to transform the building into a community center. While some activities such as boxing lessons and skateboarding had begun, the funding to renovate, maintain and operate the building wasn't raised. |
